Cyber Corp (Review)

Written By: Sam Delong: In the landscape of video games, it's nice to come across a simple indie title -- a fun little gem that you can fire up on the couch, on a Steam Deck, or ROG Ally. Cyber Corp tasks you with controlling a VR-controlled synth droid in this top-down looter shooter. In many ways, it reminds me of MIDNIGHT CLUB EXPRESS, which also has a top-down perspective. The action gets pretty intense, and large groups of enemies will surround you at later levels, particularly in co-op.
Cyber Corp's levels are procedurally generated, meaning the enemy placement, bosses, and loot are completely randomized. While your drone-controlling hero does have a melee attack, the meat of combat plays out in firearms. You will get various machine guns, rifles, and a decent selection of hand cannons. Each level run is graded based on how well you pull off combos. Your upgrades to weapons and each piece of your synth suit are permanent.

Cyber Corps story throws you up against a predictably evil corporation, as your band of hackers and mercenaries takes you through a Blade Runner-esque sci-fi storyline. I like the cut scenes, which use a comic book style still image look with text, akin to the Infamous franchise. Unfortunately, the story and writing are very unintentionally bad. The dialogue is dull, and the lack of voice acting does not help. But in a game like this, you likely are not invested in the story anyway.
Cyber Corp makes for a fun time on the couch or Steam Deck for a short while, but its procedurally generated levels and subpar leveling systems make it a slog after a while. Its moment-to-moment gameplay can be fun, but it has a thin shell and one that likely will not keep you engaged past a few weeks.
There is definitely a crowd out there that is hungry for more of these arcade-style games, but unfortunately, there are other options that capture that old-school feeling and deliver it in a more satisfying package. I would suggest trying the aforementioned MIDNIGHT CLUB EXPRESS. It's a John Wick-ian-style brawler with better visuals, style, and soundtrack.
For that, I give Cyber Corp a 3 out of 5.
