SEASON: A letter to the future (Interview)

1. WHAT WAS THE FIRST GAME THAT YOU PLAYED THAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH GAMING?

For atmosphere and mood, Ocarina of Time. For writing, LucasArts adventure games like Day of the Tentacle. And then later for storytelling/design Half Life 2 and Shadow of the Colossus. And then again as an adult for writing with Kentucky Route Zero.

2. HOW DID YOU GET INTO GAME DEVELOPMENT?

I always wanted to write a project with our art director. It turned out to be a video game. I’d previously been working in film, poetry, comics, hitchhiking, whatever.

3. WHAT WAS THE IDEA OF FORMING THE NAME OF YOUR STUDIO?

We took a vote! The name Scavengers evokes tenaciousness.

4. GIVE US THE BACKSTORY TO COMING UP WITH THE NAME OF YOUR GAME?

The title came before anything else! It was the beginning of figuring out the mood, and then everything else came from that.

5. WHAT ENGINE ARE YOU USING FOR THIS GAME AND WHY?

Unreal 4. The studio used it previously for Darwin Project so we kept it.

6. WHERE DOES SEASON: A LETTER TO THE FUTURE TAKE PLACE?

I used to describe the world of Season as the 20th century having a dream about itself, but it didn’t seem to clarify anything for anyone so I stopped saying that.

7. WHO IS THE PROTAGONIST OF THIS GAME?

A young woman named Estelle. At first writing wise she was based on a friend of mine and then once we did the voice over she started to meld with the actress who played her.

8. WHO IS BEHIND SOME OF THE MUSIC FOR THIS GAME?

Spencer Doran of the acclaimed duo Visible Cloaks composed and produced the music.

9. TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE AREAS THAT YOU CAN EXPLORE IN THE GAME?

The main action of the story takes place in a mysterious valley where you meet the last remaining inhabitants. You’re there on the final day before it’s evacuated.

10. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU CAN VIEW AND COLLECT IN THE GAME?

There’s a bunch of self-playing musical instruments in the game. Music boxes but also weirder stuff like public sleep music, a mountain air instrument, a self-playing harp, a weird organ. You can record their music and learn more about them.

11. IS THERE ANY PUZZLE-SOLVING WITHIN SEASONS?

There are things to unlock and figure out but we tried to avoid traditional puzzle design and figure out something more specific to our tone.

12. WILL THERE BE ANY DLC IN THE FUTURE FOR THIS GAME?

Stay tuned!!!!

13. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME ON DAY ONE?

We gamers are hungry for new experiences. The possibilities of the medium are so huge. So let’s immerse ourselves in this world and have a nice emotional time. There’s a lot of unprocessed grief in the air these days.
