Sony has filed a new trademark connected to Sly Cooper, giving fans of the long-dormant PlayStation franchise another reason to pay attention. However, the filing does not appear to signal the return of the series as a video game.
According to information highlighted by journalist Stephen Totilo, Sony submitted the trademark application on September 11, 2026. The filing covers a broad selection of products associated with the Sly Cooper brand.
New Trademark Covers a Wide Range of Products
The trademark reportedly includes items such as posters, graphic novels, comic books, writing supplies, pens, crayons, folders, paint brushes, modeling clay, party decorations, napkins, and silicone food-storage products.
The scope of the application is important because it does not list video games among the covered goods.
There is also no indication from the filing that Sony is preparing a new Sly Cooper animated series, movie, or other major adaptation.
For fans hoping the trademark could be an early indication of a new game, the filing therefore provides little concrete evidence beyond Sony continuing to protect and utilize the franchise commercially.
Could Sly Cooper Still Return?
The Sly Cooper franchise has been absent from the PlayStation first-party lineup for more than a decade, but interest in a revival has remained strong.
The most recent game, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, launched in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Unlike the original trilogy, it was developed by Sanzaru Games rather than Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch's last Sly Cooper release was Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, which arrived on PlayStation 2 in 2005. The studio subsequently shifted its attention toward the inFAMOUS franchise before eventually moving on to Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei.
There have been various rumors and reports over the years suggesting that Sucker Punch could potentially revisit either Sly Cooper or inFAMOUS, but Sony and Sucker Punch have not officially announced a new Sly Cooper game.
Merchandise Doesn't Confirm a New Game
While the new trademark may catch the attention of Sly Cooper fans, it is important to distinguish a merchandise trademark from an actual game announcement.
Companies frequently maintain or expand trademark protection for established intellectual properties across different product categories. In this case, the listed goods point toward merchandise and publishing-related products rather than an upcoming PlayStation game.
For now, Sly Cooper fans will have to wait for an official announcement before treating the trademark as evidence of a new game.
Still, with Sony continuing to file trademarks associated with the franchise, the Cooper Gang remains part of the company's active intellectual-property portfolio.
