A new rumor suggests Sony's next-generation PlayStation could launch with a significantly higher price tag than previous consoles, as rising component costs continue to impact the gaming hardware industry.
According to well-known hardware leaker Kepler_L2, the estimated bill of materials (BOM) for the PlayStation 6 has increased substantially since earlier reports, potentially making a launch price far above current-generation consoles more likely.
It's important to note that Sony has not confirmed the PS6's specifications, release window, or pricing, and these claims should be treated as speculation.
Manufacturing Costs Reportedly Continue to Rise
Posting on NeoGAF, Kepler_L2 claimed that the PS6's bill of materials has increased by roughly $200 compared to previous estimates.
Earlier reports from the leaker suggested the console's production cost sat around $760, a figure that could have allowed Sony to launch the system near $699 while absorbing part of the cost through hardware subsidies.
With manufacturing expenses reportedly climbing further, the leaker now believes that reaching a $699 launch price may no longer be realistic. As a result, speculation has grown that a $999 Digital Edition could become the best-case pricing scenario if current market conditions persist.
Delaying the Console May Not Solve the Problem
While some have suggested Sony could postpone the PS6's launch to wait for hardware prices to stabilize, Kepler_L2 argues that delaying the console may offer little benefit.
According to the leaker, if component costs continue rising, waiting would only increase manufacturing expenses. Conversely, if prices stabilize, there would be little reason to postpone the launch.
