PlayStation’s Biggest Single-Player Games May Become PS5-Only Again

A new rumor suggests Sony may be stepping back from releasing its biggest narrative-driven PlayStation Studios games on PC, potentially marking a significant shift in its long-term platform strategy.

According to reporting attributed to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, the change was allegedly communicated internally during a recent PlayStation town hall meeting led by PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst. While no official public statement has been made, the claim has already sparked widespread discussion across the industry.

If accurate, this would represent a notable reversal of Sony’s recent push to bring first-party titles to PC following their initial PlayStation launch.

Report Claims Shift Toward PS5-Only Narrative Games

The rumor suggests that PlayStation has decided its core single-player, story-driven titles will remain exclusive to PlayStation hardware moving forward.

This category would include some of the company’s most prominent franchises — games traditionally seen as the backbone of Sony’s first-party identity.

The alleged decision is said to stem from internal disagreement over PC releases, with one “faction within PlayStation” reportedly concerned that expanding too aggressively onto PC could dilute the value of PlayStation hardware and impact console sales.

Previous Plans May Have Already Been Changing

The report also suggests this shift has been in motion for some time. Some previously rumored PC releases — including Ghost of Yōtei — were allegedly planned for PC at one stage before those plans were reconsidered.

If true, this would align with a broader pattern of uncertainty around how Sony balances its growing PC strategy with maintaining the strength of its console ecosystem.

However, the claim remains unverified, and Sony has not publicly confirmed any change in direction.

What This Could Mean for Upcoming PlayStation Games

If the strategy is real and long-term, several high-profile titles could be affected.

Games such as Housemarque’s Saros, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine, and Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic are all expected to remain heavily tied to PlayStation’s narrative-focused lineup.

Under this rumored approach, those titles would launch exclusively on PS5, with no planned PC release — a notable shift from Sony’s recent trend of bringing major first-party games to Steam after an initial console window.

That said, the scope of the change appears limited to single-player narrative experiences. Other genres, including multiplayer-focused projects and live-service initiatives, are still expected to target both PS5 and PC.

Sony’s PC Strategy Still Uncertain

Even if the internal discussion is accurate, it does not necessarily lock PlayStation into a permanent policy shift. Sony’s PC strategy has evolved multiple times in recent years as the company tests how best to expand its audience beyond console.

For now, the situation remains unconfirmed — and subject to change as Sony continues refining its broader approach to game distribution.

Until then, fans will be watching closely to see whether PlayStation’s biggest story-driven franchises truly remain PS5-exclusive once again.
