A fresh rumor surrounding PlayStation’s inFAMOUS franchise has reignited excitement among fans, with claims suggesting a new project based on the beloved superhero series may currently be in development for PS5.
The rumor comes from VGC journalist Jordan Middler, who mentioned during a recent podcast episode that he’s “under the impression that there is an inFAMOUS thing happening somewhere else in PlayStation at the minute.”
According to Middler, the project does not appear to be led by Sucker Punch Productions, the original developer behind the franchise. That detail alone has sparked major speculation online about whether PlayStation could be handing the series to another internal studio for a remake, remaster, or even a reboot.
Shortly after the podcast aired, Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller invited Middler onto Gamescast to clarify the statement further. During the discussion, Middler explained that the information currently comes from a single source and has not yet been independently verified.
Even so, he hinted that the project may involve remakes of the original PS3-era inFAMOUS titles for PlayStation 5.
“That wasn’t told to me directly, but that was very much implied,” Middler said.
He also cautioned that there’s always a possibility the project may have changed internally or even been canceled since the information was first shared with him.
Despite the uncertainty, the rumor alone was enough to send longtime inFAMOUS fans into a frenzy across social media, Reddit, and gaming forums. Many players have spent years requesting modern remakes of the original games, particularly the first two entries starring Cole MacGrath.
The original inFAMOUS launched in 2009 on PlayStation 3 and quickly became one of Sony’s standout superhero franchises thanks to its morality system, electricity-based powers, and open-world gameplay. Its sequel expanded the formula further before the series shifted toward Delsin Rowe in 2014’s inFAMOUS Second Son for PlayStation 4.
Fan reactions to the latest rumor have been mixed but largely optimistic.
Some players are excited by the possibility of finally seeing the original games rebuilt for modern hardware, while others remain cautious about the franchise returning without Sucker Punch directly involved.
“If Sucker Punch isn’t connected, then frankly, I want nothing to do with it,” one Reddit user wrote, while others argued that full remakes would make more sense than simple remasters given the age of the PS3 titles.
Sucker Punch previously stated back in 2022 that it had “no plans” at the time to revisit either inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper, adding that no other studios were actively working on projects tied to those franchises either.
However, the developer also notably left the door open for the future, saying it would “never say never” when it came to returning to older PlayStation properties.
With Ghost of Yōtei now on the horizon for Sucker Punch, it’s possible PlayStation may be exploring ways to revive inFAMOUS through another team entirely.
For now, though, fans should treat the rumors cautiously until Sony officially confirms anything.
