God of War Laufey Delayed to May 20, 2027 as Santa Monica Studio Continues Development
The road to a major game release rarely goes exactly as planned, especially when a studio is working to bring a long-running franchise in a new direction. Players waiting to experience Santa Monica Studio's next God of War adventure will now have a little longer to wait, as the developer has pushed back the release of God of War Laufey. The upcoming title was previously expected to arrive in February, but its launch has now moved further into 2027.
God of War Laufey will now release on May 20, 2027, replacing its previously scheduled February 16 release date. Santa Monica Studio says the additional development time will allow the team to focus on the finishing touches and push the game toward its full potential.
In its announcement, the studio explained that it intends to make the most of the time remaining before launch, emphasizing continued refinement rather than rushing the game out on its original schedule.
Faye Takes Center Stage in a Different God of War Adventure
Announced during a State of Play presentation last June, God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight to Faye, Kratos' wife. The story follows her journey through the Everywhen, a mysterious realm where different mythologies collide, after she seemingly passes away.
During her journey, Faye encounters Begtse and Sekhmet before eventually escaping their imprisonment with assistance from Phranque, the Cosmic Cube, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian connected to a mysterious sword. Her ultimate goal is to find her way back home to Kratos and Atreus.
The change in protagonist also brings a different approach to combat. Laufey combines elements of classic God of War action with mechanics from the more recent entries, giving Faye access to air combos, ranged attacks, and magical abilities. The Serpent Bow is among the weapons revealed so far, while armor sets with different perks and unlockable skills provide additional ways to customize her abilities.
February's Crowded Release Schedule Could Be a Factor
The delay also moves God of War Laufey away from what was shaping up to be a busy February release period. Several other major games were expected around that window, including Metro 2039, Fable, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, and Final Fantasy 14: Evercold.
Avoiding that crowded schedule could give the game more room to stand out, although Santa Monica Studio has not confirmed that competition played a role in the decision. The developer's stated reason remains the opportunity to add finishing touches and further improve the experience.
With its new May 20, 2027 release date, God of War Laufey now has additional development time ahead of launch. Fans will have to wait a few more months to see Faye's journey unfold, but the studio appears focused on delivering the experience it originally envisioned.
Are you disappointed by the delay, or would you rather Santa Monica Studio take the extra time to polish God of War Laufey?
