Asha Sharma Says “Clarity Is Kindness” as She Takes on Xbox’s Biggest Problems

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is taking a blunt approach to Microsoft's gaming business, arguing that transparency and clear communication will be essential as the company works through a period of major change.

Sharma became CEO of Microsoft Gaming in February 2026, succeeding Phil Spencer, and has quickly made it clear that the business needs to confront its problems rather than avoid them.

“Clarity Is Kindness”

In a new profile from The Wall Street Journal, Sharma describes a leadership philosophy centered on being direct about problems and opportunities. Her mantra, “Clarity is kindness,” reflects her belief that employees need a straightforward understanding of where the company stands.

The approach comes as Xbox deals with difficult questions surrounding its business performance, Game Pass and its broader strategy.

Microsoft's latest financial results show Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% year over year in FY26 Q4, while Microsoft said it is making the decisions necessary to reset the gaming business for long-term growth.

Xbox Is Going Through a Major Reset

Sharma's arrival comes during one of the biggest strategic shifts in Xbox's history. Microsoft has been changing how it approaches hardware, content, services and the wider Xbox ecosystem.

Microsoft has also said it expects the gaming business to return to growth in fiscal 2027, with the company pointing to its first-party franchises and global studio portfolio as major strengths.

For Sharma, the challenge is not simply increasing revenue. It's determining what Xbox should prioritize and communicating those decisions clearly to both employees and players.

Game Pass Remains Part of the Challenge

Game Pass has been another major part of Microsoft's gaming strategy, but the service has faced slower growth than the company originally expected.

Microsoft has already adjusted Game Pass pricing and its approach to the service, while executives have continued emphasizing the need to provide more value to players.

Sharma's leadership now puts her at the center of determining what the next version of Xbox looks like.

The biggest question is whether this emphasis on transparency can help Microsoft successfully execute its broader reset while rebuilding momentum around Xbox.
